What is the career of Tilman Fertitta?

Selling Shaklee vitamins was how Fertitta got his start in business. In the 1980s, he established and oversaw a construction and development company, using which he constructed the Key Largo Hotel in Galveston.

In 1980, Fertitta co-owned Landry’s Seafood, the original Landry’s restaurant, which made its debut in Katy, Texas. He helped open Willie G’s Seafood & Steaks in Houston the following year. In late 1986, Fertitta assumed leadership of Landry’s after obtaining majority stakes in both companies.

After going public in 1993, he experienced a period of fast growth. Over the course of ten years, Landry’s changed and acquired not just more restaurants but also enterprises in the entertainment, gaming, and hotel industries. The company constructed the theme park Kemah Boardwalk in 1998 after purchasing the 32-acre San Luis Resort on Galveston Island in 1996.

Landry purchased the Hilton Galveston Island Resort, Muer Restaurants, Rainforest Cafe, Saltgrass Steak House, and Golden Nugget Hotel & Casinos in the 2000s. Houston’s entertainment destination, the Downtown Aquarium, made its premiere in 2003.

In 2010, Landry’s acquired three new restaurant brands: the Oceanaire, Claim Jumper, and Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. The next year, McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurants and Morton’s The Steakhouse were added to the company’s list of eateries. The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier was inaugurated by Landry’s in 2012.

Later in the decade, acquisitions were made of Restaurants Unlimited, B.R. Guest, and Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak Houses. Additionally, Landry’s bought back Joe’s Crab Shack, which it had sold in 2006. In the meantime, the company started creating and acquiring the eateries that make up Landry’s Signature Group, which consists of Vic & Anthony’s, Brenner’s Steakhouse, Grotto, and La Griglia. The Post Oak Hotel & Tower in Houston and the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio are two of Landry’s other properties.

Upon the Houston Texans’ establishment in 1999, Fertitta was among the original investors. Up until 2008, when he sold his share, he stayed Bob McNair’s partner as the owner of the Texans. Afterwards, in 2017, Fertitta acquired the Houston Rockets for an NBA record $2.2 billion. As part of the deal, he also acquired ownership of Clutch Gaming, a professional esports business.

He would meet with small business owners to assess whether their products would work well for his company; if they would, he would make them an offer. “Billion Dollar Buyer” concluded in 2018 after three seasons.
