England manager Gareth Southgate is set to hold talks with Manchester United’s 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo in a bid to persuade him to represent England rather than Ghana.
Mainoo, who has represented England at U17, U18, and U19 levels, is still eligible to play for Ghana through his parents. However, Southgate is keen to secure Mainoo’s commitment to England ahead of the midfielder’s potential senior debut.
According to the Daily Star, Southgate is expected to meet with Mainoo in the coming weeks to discuss his international future. The England boss is understood to be impressed with Mainoo’s progress at Manchester United, where he has made one Premier League appearance so far this season.
Mainoo’s impressive performance in Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Everton on Sunday has sparked interest in his international allegiance. The midfielder was a standout performer, completing two of his three dribble attempts and creating one chance for his teammates.
Southgate is confident that he can persuade Mainoo to represent England, and he is prepared to fast-track the midfielder into the England U21 squad if necessary.
“Kobbie is a very talented young player,” said Southgate. “We are aware of his interest in Ghana, but we are also very keen for him to represent England. We are going to have talks with him and his family, and we hope that he will choose to play for England.”
Mainoo is a highly rated prospect at Manchester United, and he is seen as one of the brightest young talents in English football.
If Southgate is able to persuade Mainoo to represent England, it would be a major coup for the Three Lions. Mainoo has the potential to be a key player for England for many years to come.
