Ghana Immigration Service arrests ECOWAS Nationals in Western Region: A Crackdown on Human Trafficking and Commercial Sex Work

The Western Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has recently conducted a successful operation targeting suspected human trafficking and commercial sex work. The operation, carried out by the Axim Sector Command, resulted in the arrest of 31 ECOWAS nationals in the Ellembelle District and Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.

Operation Details

  • The operation commenced at 0230hrs on Saturday, October 14.
  • Location: The raid focused on a brothel facility and adjacent drinking bars and makeshift structures within the Essiama enclave.
  • Arrests:
    • 28 suspected commercial sex workers, including two nursing mothers.
    • Two suspected human trafficking collaborators.
    • Mr. Kofi Bekoe, a 62-year-old Ghanaian, who is the owner and manager of the facility.
    • Mr. Ndubueze Okereke (37) and his wife, Ifeoma Okereke (35), both Nigerians and suspected traffickers.
  • Illegal Entry: All suspects entered the country illegally, lacking passports or any other travel identification documents.
  • Evidence: A search revealed packs of used and unused condoms in the rooms.
  • Previous Arrest: Mr. Kofi Bekoe was previously apprehended for harboring foreign nationals engaged in commercial sex work.

The suspects are currently in the custody of the Western Regional GIS Headquarters for further investigations, prosecution, and eventual repatriation to their respective countries.
