
Following the passing of their current member of parliament, voters in the Kumawu Constituency will choose a new representative for the area in less than 24 hours.
At the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he had been admitted for a critical condition, Philip Basoah passed away on Monday, March 27.
The late Kumawu Member of Parliament Philip Basoah’s brother, Solomon Basoah, reported that his brother was discovered unconscious in his room on March 24 and was sent to the hospital, where he passed away four days later.
On May 20, Philip Basoah, a deceased member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who represented the Kumawu constituency in the Ashanti Region, was laid to rest.
Here are the candidates vying to succeed Philip Basoah in parliament as the Electoral Commission is poised to convene its in less than 24 hours.
Ernest Yaw Anim of the NPP
Ernest Yaw Anim, who won the party’s nomination for the Kumawu constituency seat with 195 votes, defeated Ama Serwaa and three other candidates.
On the ballot, he is listed as the first choice.
In order to ensure that the NPP keeps its parliamentary seat in Kumawu in the next by-election, Ernest Yaw Anim is certain that he can reconcile the divisions among party members in the area.
Since the NPP has historically held the Kumawu Constituency, Ernest Yaw Anim is expected to win.
Akwasi Amankwa of NDC
Akwasi Amankwa, also known as “Tom Cee,” was approved by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to run as the party’s parliamentary candidate in the 23rd May 2023 By-election.
According to rumors, Dr. Kwabena Duffour, a former finance minister, has a brother named Akwasi Amankwa.
The second candidate on the ballot is Akwasi Amankwa.
Kwaku Duah, a candidate without ties
Kwaku Duah made the decision to run as an independent.
He ran for the vacant MP seat in 2020.
In the 2020 election, Mr. Duah finished in second place with 11,698 valid votes, or 39.96% of the total votes cast. Mr. Basoah won the race with 14,960 valid votes, or 51.11% of the total votes cast.
After the by-elections on May 23, he plans to run as an independent to enter parliament.
The third candidate on the ballot is Kwaku Duah.
Whenku Duah
Another contender running under the name Kwaku Duah for the Kumawu Constituency entered the race as an independent.
Kwaku Duah, who was mostly unknown to voters until announcing his intention to run for office, wants to become the MP for the Kumawu Constituency.
The fourth candidate on the ballot is Kwaku Duah.
