She is known for her glamorous screen persona and her portrayal of scheming seductresses, most notably Alexis Carrington Colby on the soap opera Dynasty (1981–89).
Collins was born in Paddington, London, England, to Elsa (née Bessant), a dance teacher, and Joseph William Collins, a talent agent. Her father was Jewish and her mother was Anglican. She has two younger siblings, Jackie, a novelist, and Bill, a property agent.
Collins began her acting career at a young age, appearing in school plays and local productions. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and signed a contract with the Rank Organisation film studio in 1950. She made her film debut in Lady Godiva Rides Again (1951) and appeared in a number of British films throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including The Land That Time Forgot (1975) and Empire of the Ants (1977).
In 1978, Collins starred in the film The Stud, which was a major success in the United States. This led to her being cast in Dynasty in 1981. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama in 1983 for her performance.
