In a devastating incident that has shocked the community, a premix fuel explosion occurred at a depot in Essikado, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives and leaving several others injured. The explosion took place on Saturday, May 18, 2024, around 4:00 PM, and has since prompted an investigation by local authorities.
According to reports, the incident occurred after a leakage at the premix fuel depot in Ngyirasia, a fishing community in Essikado-Ketan of the Western Region. The leaked fuel came into contact with fire from a nearby fish smoking facility, leading to the explosion. Sixteen individuals were severely injured as a result, with two of them succumbing to their injuries.
The victims have been identified as Joseph Adom, a 15-year-old boy, and Justice Dadzie, a 7-year-old child. They were among the 13 individuals rushed to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital for urgent medical treatment. The other injured victims were taken to the Saint Benedict Hospital in Inchaban.
Local residents and authorities are reeling from the tragedy, with the community mourning the loss of the two young lives. The National Fire Service and the Police have launched a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and to implement measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Nana Kobina, the chief of Ngyirasia, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He called for prompt action to address safety concerns and provide the necessary infrastructure to protect the residents of Ngyirasia.
